Lascaux in the Dordogne (Périgord noir)

Lascaux in the Dordogne is obviously best known because of the unique cave paintings. The world-famous Lascaux cave was discovered in 1942.

However, since 1963 the original Lascaux cave is no longer accessible to the public, in order to stop the deterioration of the paintings. The air that people exhale is quite damaging to the natural pigments that were used in making these paintings.

Fortunately it is no problem to enjoy the unique cave paintings with animals, people, scenes and mythical symbols as they have been painstakingly re-created by historians in a new cave called Lascaux II, which is accessible to the public. The reproduction of this 30.000 years old art certainly merits a visit and has already inspired countless modern artists.

Lascaux II is open every day, except on Mondays. It is located in Montignac and can be visited with a guided tour that takes about 40 minutes.
