Sarlat in the Dordogne (Périgord Noir)
Sarlat is a lot more than just the capital of the Perigord Noir. It is also an historical town that has been especially well preserved. Over 1000 years of architecture can be admired here.

As a city, Sarlat emerged in the 8th Century. It has a rich history and was once even a part of England. The "Cathédrale de Saint-Sacerdos" was build by the English King Henry IV.

In terms of the number of classified buildings per square kilometre, Sarlat is the most important European city. Many historic films and serials are still being made in the mediaeval surroundings.

An event not to miss is the grand outdoor market on Saturday. For a day, it turns Sarlat into a bustling city, free of cars but with more or less the entire region attending. Food, clothes, art, antiques and arts and craft products are put out for sale. Musicians are playing their tunes everywhere and there is also plenty of street theatre going on.

Sarlat is about 20 km's from La Combe and it is also a cosy city for having a pleasant quality meal or quietly enjoying a drink on one of the many terraces.
